Polly Letofsky, who has spent the past four years walking to raise awareness of breast cancer, is on the home stretch.  The Minnesota native is scheduled to arrive Wednesday in Red Wing enroute to Colorado, where her GlobalWalk began in 1999 and will end in 2004.

Several local groups are supporting Letofsky.  Some people are expected to walk into town with her, and everyone is invited to hear her speak briefly at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lily's.

Letofsky is especially interested in meeting breast cancer survivors, said Linda Thielbar.  She and Mary Ellen Halverson, members of the Red Wing Chapter of the American Association of University Women, are organizing the welcome and getting word out into the community--League of Women Voters, Women's Network, Cancer Support Group, YMCA and others.

">"I knew I'd like Red Wing." Polly letofsky announced with a wide smile when she was greeted by about 50 applauding women, children and men Wednesday afternoon at Lily's

Letofsky, who is four years and three months into a five-year walk around the world to promote breast cancer awareness, walked into town in a drizzle with Lynda Kern as her guide.  She planned to spend today resting up for next stage of her journey, including a visit to Red Wing Shoe Co., where she was to receive a pair of walking boots--her favorite Red Wing brand.

Joan Dyrstad, board chairwoman for Fairview Red Wing Health Services, greeted her on behalf of the informal welcoming committee.  Fairview is active in preventive care and support for women, too, she told Letofsky.  At least a half-dozen breast cancer survivors mingled with members of the supporting organizations, primarily the American Association of University Women and the Lions Club.
