Woman's
walking trek
goes through
Clinton area

Clinton--Polly Letofsky is fighting breast cancer--one step at a time.

The 41-year-old woman is walking through the Clinton area this week in one of the final stages of her five-year, around-the-world walking trek call "GlobalWalk for Breast Cancer."

The major goals of the 15,000 mile journey include raising funds to battle breast cancer and helping educate people about the disease.

So far, she has walked some 12,700 miles in the journey.  If all goes according to plan the trek will end next Aug. 1 in Vail, Colo. (Her journey started in that community on Aug. 1, 1999.)

"I want to thank everyone for ordering this wonderful weather.  Knock on wood.  I thought I would walking through snow by now," she said with a laugh on Wednesday.

Even though she may run into some snow before leaving the area, Letofsky said she is not too concerned because she was walked in just about every condition imaginable.  Those harsh conditions have included everything from major flooding, lightning storms, hail, 110-degree heat, forest fires and an earthquake.

Still, walking through Iowa during the snowy season has its hazards.  That's why she is especially thankful to the service organization that has been helping through much of her five year journey--The Lions Clubs.

"Because of the weather, it's too cold to camp out at night and I might get stuck in a place because of snow.  That's why I really rely on the Lions Clubs of Iowa," she added.
