Polly Puts Her Feet Up

Nelson's streets are fall of tourists, but one is here on a particularly well-deserved holiday.

American Polly Letofsky is on a mission to walk around the world raising funds for breast cancer.

Ms Letofsky is having a six-day break in Nelson before she continues.

She has already completed the North American leg of her walk and is now halfway through the New Zealand leg.

She always planned on having a break once she got to Nelson.

"It's my single favourite City in all of New Zealand," she said.

Her walk does not actually go through Nelson. She plans on going back to Picton before walking down the east coast of the South Island.

This is the longest break she has had since she left her Colorado home in August.

Her plans don't include much walking while in Nelson.

"The furthest I'm going to be walking is to the movie theatre," she said.

"We've tried to see how many cafes we can hit in one day.

Her aim is to raise US$350,000 (NZ$673,000) for breast cancer. So far an estimated US$55,000 (NZ$105,760) has been raised.

"We sell T-shirts on the side of the road - if anyone sees us they can stop and buy a T-shirt," she said.

Ms Letofsky plans to travel to Australia after the New Zealand leg of her trip.

While she would like to walk across Australia, her trip will be confined to the continent's east coast, because of the bigger population there.

Ms Letofsky has a website which she proudly says gets over 100,000 hits a month.

Anyone wanting more information on breast cancer can go to this site on www.globalwalk.org or www.breast.co.nz.
